There is a lot of confusing and contradictory information about the differences between hemp, CBD and marijuana oils. We will simplify and explain each one so that you can understand the uses and benefits of each.

What is the difference between hemp and marijuana plants?

Cannabis is a plant family and both hemp and marijuana are different strains of the cannabis plant family.

Hemp and marijuana are each used for different purposes. Think of it in terms of mushrooms. You have some mushrooms that are edible, some are poisonous, others are medicinal, and still others are psychedelic. They are all mushrooms but depending on which one you eat you will get a very different result. It’s the same with hemp and marijuana. Both are cannabis but each will give you a different result.

There is another factor that adds to the confusion, which is that people tend to refer to marijuana as cannabis. Although that is technically correct remember this: all marijuana is cannabis, but not all cannabis is marijuana. For example, all vodka is alchohol, but all alchohol is not vodka.

Does CBD oil come from marijuana or hemp plants?

CBD can be derived from both marijuana and hemp plants. What distinguishes the two plants are the levels of THC to CBD found in each.

Very simply put, the marijuana plant contains higher amounts of THC than CBD.

According to Colorado Department of Agriculture, a hemp plant is defined as any plant of the Genus Cannabis with less than 0.3% THC. Hemp plants with over 0.3% THC are defined as  marijuana.

What is THC?

THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive compound that gives you that euphoric “high” feeling. THC is extracted from the flowers and leaves of the marijuana plant and is used for medicinal and recreational purposes.

What is CBD?

On the other hand, the hemp plant contains very low THC levels (under 0.3%) and higher levels of the CBD (Cannabidiol) compound.

CBD is found only in the flowers and leaves of the hemp plant, is not psychoactive and has all kinds of medicinal and therapeutic uses.

The hemp seeds do not contain any CBD, although the seeds have other benefits and are very nutritious.

Should you choose CBD oil derived from marijuana or hemp?

If you want the benefits of CBD without the high, you should look for hemp derived CBD. Hemp CBD is also what should be given to pets. You should never give a pet any kind of marijuana products.

Hemp derived CBD oil is legal in all states, as opposed to marijuana CBD products which are only legal in certain states due to the fact that they typically also have higher THC levels.

Hemp seed oil vs hemp CBD oil.

The hemp plant produces both hemp seed oil and CBD oil, but there is a huge difference between the two.

Hemp seed oil

Hemp seed oil comes from the seeds of the plant. Hemp seeds contain vitamins and minerals, are a complete protein providing all essential amino acids, as well as being high in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. The seeds are highly nutritious and have many benefits some of which include being very good for heart health, skin and hair, and reducing inflammation – just to name a few. The seeds can be eaten whole, ground into flour, or pressed into hemp oil. However, the seeds of the hemp plant do not contain CBD.

Hemp CBD oil

CBD oil also comes from the same hemp plant but it is extracted only from the flowers and leaves. CBD oil is not nutritious like hemp seed oil, but it has a myriad of medicinal qualities, just a few of which include providing pain relief, having anti-seizure properties, the ability to fight cancer and combat anxiety, and tons more.

Where can I buy hemp CBD oil?

This is where it gets tricky. Hemp seed oil is what you will find at your grocery or health food store, but hemp seed oil contains no CBD. Because CBD oil is not regulated by the FDA, some companies have taken advantage of that fact by marketing hemp seed oil as hemp CBD oil. This quote is taken directly from the FDA website:

“In late February 2015, FDA issued several warning letters to firms that market unapproved drugs for the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of diseases. Some of these firms claim that their products contain cannabidiol (CBD). FDA has tested those products and, in some of them, did not detect any CBD. It is important to note that these products are not approved by FDA for the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of any disease, and often they do not even contain the ingredients found on the label. Consumers should beware purchasing and using any such products.”

If you are looking for hemp oil containing CBD, you need to make sure that you buy from a reputable source that extracts the oil from the hemp flowers and leaves.

I did a quick search on Amazon to see what the ingredients in the CBD oils they are selling are. Every one I saw claimed it was CBD oil but had hemp seed oil listed as the main ingredient.
