Alternate Sources of Phytocannabinoids

Every animal naturally produces cannabinoids, which are compounds that attach to receptors located throughout the body and help to balance all the major organ systems. These endocannabinoids help to regulate processes like sleep, appetite, digestion, motor control, immune function, inflammation, pain, appetite, metabolism, mood, and more.

The two most often talked about phytocannabinoids are THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD  (Cannabidiol), but scientists have identified over 100 different cannabinoids. Some of these are:

  • Cannabigerol (CBG)
  • Cannabichromene (CBC)
  • Cannabidiol (CBD)
  • Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)
  • Cannabinol (CBN)
  • Cannabinodiol (CBDL)
  • Cannabicyclol (CBL)
  • Cannabielsoin (CBE)
  • Cannabitriol (CBT)
  • Cannabivarin (CBV)
  • Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV)
  • Cannabidivarin (CBDV)
  • Cannabichromevarin (CBCV)
  • Cannabigerovarin (CBGV)
  • Cannabigerol Monoethyl Ether (CBGM)

Phytocannabinoids can be found in every day foods. Have you ever added some pepper your meal or sprinkled some flax on your oatmeal? Ever eaten a carrot or some broccoli? If you have eaten any of these foods then you have consumed cannabinoids.

Although cannabis is the best known source of phytocannabinoids (phyto meaning plant), there are several other plants that also naturally produce phytocannabinoids. These attach to the receptors in our bodies just like the cannabinoids that we create, and can be used as a supplement if the body can not produce enough cannabinoids on its own. 

Some phytocannabinoid rich plants include:

Echinacea is a supplement that is most often associated with preventing the common cold. It has been shown to contain a compound that binds with the CB2 receptors and can help stimulate the immune system.

Hops (Humulus), the ingredient used in making beer also belong to the Cannabaceae family and contain the phytocannabinoid CBD (but no THC). Hops have shown a great deal of promising results in studies. 

Helichrysum, a species of plant that belongs to the sunflower family, has been used for hundreds of years and contains the compound CBG (Cannabigerol) which has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal properties. 

Black pepper contains BCP (Beta Caryophyllene) and has anti-inflammatory properties that may relieve symptoms of arthritis and osteoporosis.

Japanese Liverwort contains a compound that works like THC without the psychoactive effects, and is used to treat inflammation and chronic pain.

Cacao and black truffles (the mushroom not the chocolate kind), both contain chemicals that interact with the CB1 receptors (many of which are located primarily in the brain) and can elevate your mood and make you feel happy.

Electric Daisy attaches to the CB2 receptors and combats pain. It is such a potent 
local anesthetic for tooth pain that it’s called the “toothache plant”

Some other everyday foods that contain beneficial phytocannabinoids are rosemary, lavender, cinnamom, maca, basil, kava, flax & cloves.
