Turmeric has many health benefits, and has been used to treat conditions from arthritis to Alzheimer’s, and even cancer. But did you know that curcumin, the compound that gives turmeric its vibrant golden color, is also incredible for naturally lustrous and glowing skin.
Benefits of turmeric for skin:
- Brightens skin and reduces dullness.
- Has anti-oxidant properties and helps fight free-radicals that cause fine lines and wrinkles.
- Reduces redness from blemishes and conditions like eczema, rosacea & psoriasis.
- Has lightening properties that can help reduce dark spots and even out skin tone.
- It’s an anti-inflammatory that can help clear acne.
- Reduces scarring, stretch marks and helps to heal wounds.
Honey & Yogurt
This mask combines turmeric with honey which is very moisturizing and soothing for the skin. Honey is also an anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial that’s great for blemishes and for slowing pre-mature aging.
There is also a bit of yogurt that helps tighten pores and remove dead skin cells. Yogurt is perfect for calming a sunburn, too.
DIY Turmeric Honey & Yogurt Mask
- 1 tsp turmeric
- 1 tsp honey
- 3 tbsp yogurt
Mix the ingredients in a small bowl. Apply an even layer of the turmeric mask to skin. Leave on for about 10 minutes and rinse with warm water. Follow with serum and moisturizer.
A word of warning: Turmeric is also used as a dye which means that it can stain just about anything it comes in contact with. Be careful when you mix the mask and and when you apply it so that it doesn’t stain your clothes, towels, counters, etc.
Turmeric can sometimes also leave a trace of color on skin. I find that rubbing a bit of coconut or olive oil on your skin will remove any trace of color left over. Just to be safe though, don’t use the turmeric mask for the first time before a big event!
Check for allergies
If you are allergic to turmeric in food, do not use it on your skin. Before you apply the turmeric mask to your face you might want to check that you are not allergic. Apply a pea sized amount to your forearm and wait for 24-48 hours to make sure you don’t have any reactions to the mask.
