Types of CBD Products – and how to use them

There are many different types of CBD products on the market. Here are some of the more popular products, so if you are not sure which one might be right for you…then read on.

Types of CBD products:

Some of the most popular CBD products include:

  • oil tinctures
  • capsules
  • edibles
  • salves & lotions
  • bath bombs
  • vape pens

Oil Tinctures

Tinctures are probably the most common type of CBD product. Tinctures are made by infusing a carrier oil, such as hemp seed, grapeseed or MCT oil, with hemp CBD extract.

Oils are most effective when taken sublingually (Latin for under the tongue). The area under the tongue is full of tiny capillaries (blood vessels). By placing the oil under your tongue, the CBD gets absorbed straight into the bloodstream by the blood vessels. This method makes absorption faster than capsules since the product doesn’t have to travel through your digestive system first.

How long does it take to work/how long does it last?

It is recommended that you place the oil under your tongue for 60-90 seconds before you swallow. You can typically start feeling the effects anywhere from 20-45 minutes and it can last up to 3-4 hours.

Oils come in natural flavor, or for those who don’t like the taste, in flavors like mint, orange or lemon.

Why choose a tincture?

  • easy to administer
  • dosage is easily adjusted
  • great for people who can’t (or don’t like) to swallow pills

Oils are my favorite way to take CBD because of the fact that I can adjust the dosage. I also give CBD oil to our dog, Jack for his anxiety issues.

Capsules

Capsules offer the same benefits as oils, but in a pre-measured capsule. They are simple and easy to take. If you are already taking supplements or vitamins, you can simply add the CBD capsules to your regimen.

The drawback to having a set dose is that if you decide you want to take a little more, or a little less, it’s not as easy to adjust.

Capsules can also take a little longer to kick in (usually 30-60 minutes) because they need to travel though your digestive system and be metabolized by the liver to be absorbed. The effects can last up to 3-4 hours.

Why choose a capsule?

  • pre-measured, so you know exactly how much you are taking
  • good if you don’t like the taste of tinctures

Edibles

Edibles are CBD infused gummies, candies, chocolates, cookies, even drinks. Edibles are an easy and tasty way to get your dose of CBD.

One drawback of edibles is that the dosing can sometimes be a bit inconsistent. They may not be the best option if you need to measure very precise dosages.

How long does it take to work/how long does it last?

It can take a while (1 or even up to 2 hours) to feel the effects of edibles. The effect tends to last longer though – up to 8 hours.

Edibles are great if you have trouble sleeping because they last such a long time, so you are not as likely to end up waking up in the middle of the night.

Why choose CDB edibles

  • edibles are a tasty and easy way to take CBD
  • the effect tends to last for several hours.

How quickly all the above methods take effect will depend in part on how much you have eaten before you take your CBD. The more contents in your stomach the longer it will take for the CBD to work.

Vape Pens

Vape pens are made up of a battery, a coil that acts as a heating element and a section that holds the CBD oil. When the coil heats up it heats the oil and allows you to inhale the vapor. Because the oil is not burned it does not produce smoke – just vapor.

Unfortunately, many companies buy the components for the vape pens from China. These can contain solvents that once heated to high temperatures become toxic.

One of these solvents in particular is propylene glycol. When
propylene glycol is heated to high temperatures in can transform into
formaldehyde.

To prevent this, make sure your vape pen is free of solvents. You can also buy a vape pen with adjustable heat settings and make sure that you always use the lower setting.

Research suggests that vaping is safer than inhaling smoke, but more research needs to be done before the effects of vaping are known.

How long does it take to work/how long does it last?

With vape pens you will feel the effects immediately. Vaped CBD can be felt in as little as 30 seconds. The effects usually last 2-3 hours.

Why choose a vape pen?

  • small, easy to carry and discreet
  • easy to use
  • take effect almost immediately

CBD Salves & Lotions

Salves and lotions are excellent for muscle aches, soreness, joint and arthritis pain and inflammation.

Lotions are applied directly to the area and are quickly absorbed by the skin.

Why choose a CBD salve?

  • can be applied to a specific area for targeted relief
  • quickly absorbed

Bath Bombs

Bath bombs are made of epsom salts, essential oils and fragrances, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), and of course CBD oil.

When you soak in a tub of warm water, your pores open and the CBD oil is easily absorbed through your skin.

Bath bombs are also excellent for sore muscles after a grueling workout.

I tried a CBD bath bomb for the first time a few nights ago. After my soak, I felt extremely relaxed and slept really well.

Why choose CBD bath bombs?

  • bath bombs are amazingly relaxing!
  • great if you have trouble sleeping
  • excellent for aches and muscle soreness

The bottom line:

Everyone is different and will react to CBD differently. Some people may feel the CBD faster or for longer periods than others will.

The dosing will also depend on the individual. It’s typically recommended that you start with the lowest dose and work your way up.

Because CBD is not psychoactive you won’t feel a high. What you should feel is the absence of anxiety or pain. Depending on why you are taking CBD, you might also need to give it a bit of time to build up in the body, so it may take a few days to feel the full effects.

As with any other medication CBD can interact with certain drugs so always speak to a medical professional and do your reasearch.
