These sweet potato treats are all natural, healthy, inexpensive and simple to make. They are also super tasty so your pup is sure to love them, (and you might too)!

Both Jack and Sawyer love these treats. Jack especially, goes CRAZY for them and will not leave the kitchen when he knows I’m making them…and he always knows!

Although the sweet potatoes need to bake for quite a while, the hands on time is only about 5 minutes. Simply slice the potatoes, toss in some coconut oil, sprinkle with the ginger and cinnamon and bake.

Coconut oil benefits:

  • improves digestion and can help with colitis and inflammatory bowel syndrome
  • reduces inflammation
  • helps to improve brain function
  • contains medium-chain fatty acids, especially lauric acid which can help fight harmful viruses, bacteria and fungi
  • maintains healthy skin and coat
  • helps fight infection and diseases

Ginger

After tossing the sweet potato slices with the coconut oil, if you like, you can also sprinkle a bit of ginger and cinnamon over them.

Ginger is well known for its powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, as well as its ability to fight nausea. In addition, ginger can help with bloat and other digestive problems and is phenomenal at relieving arthritis symptoms and joint inflammation.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon also has anti-inflammatory properties and can help with arthritis. Studies have shown that cinnamon can help to regulate blood sugar levels and may lower blood pressure. The spice is also a powerful anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, and may help dogs who are prone to yeast infections.

A few words of caution:

In small doses cinnamon is not toxic to dogs. Adding a bit of cinnamon to your dog’s food can be beneficial, but the spice should not be given to dogs in large doses, such as in cinnamon supplement pills.

The type of cinnamon you give your dog also makes a difference. True cinnamon, also called Mexican Cinnamon, is the bark of the Ceylon Cinnamon tree. It’s sweeter and lighter in color and, most importantly for your dog, has lower levels of the compound courmarin which in large doses can be toxic.

The cinnamon that you will typically find in your supermarket is Cassia Cinnamon which comes from the Chinese Cinnamon Tree. Cassia cinnamon has higher levels of courmarin, so if you can use Ceylon cinnamon.

Cinnamon can also act as a blood thinner.
